Discussion Questions re Video Games

2.
I agree violent video games can are related to violence and aggression for youth. Teenagers learn using violence to deal with their problems from violent video games. In video games, they can fight or kill people if they are not satisfied with them. However, this is not correct, violence is the worst method to solve problems in real life. For some teenagers, they may confuse the reality and video games, and think they can solve problems by violent way as video games. Therefore, I believe video will affect children, especially those who didn’t develop their personalities completely.

7.
In my opinion, players will get addition with video games. Video games’ designers always make different goals or monsters to keep players’ interest. According to players’ degrees increasing, the goals will become more difficult to receive or monsters will be stronger than before. In order to pursue their companions or raise their degree, game players will keep playing the game instead of doing something else. In addition, many players join in the groups or have companions inside video games. As a result, they like to spend more time on playing games with their on-line friends

8.
Many game players may control their time well on playing video games, they still can keep their careers, schools, family and social relationships. However, for some serious players, they spend most of their time on playing games, they forget dates with their friends or spouses. Players can not distinguish real live from video games. Finally, they are more likely to care about what happens in the video games than real lives. Some player with serious addition of video games may lose their jobs, fail school or break marriage or social relationship with others from over-playing video games.

reaction for oral presentation- others

Through doing our own presentations and listening to others, we can learn a lot skills or experiences from others. Everyone has the different way to perform their presentation, after I listened different styles of presentation, I learn what is a good performance for audiences, how can make your presentation more interesting and also what kind of power point will assist speaker. In my opinion, the speed & volume & tone of speaking are also important to keep audiences’ attention. If u speak too quickly without changing ur tone or voice, it will make audiences distribute their attentions. In addition, we learn a lot of information from other topics. It is a nice activity during the class.

reaction for oral presentation- your own

Fortunately, everyone finished our oral presentations. Before I did my presentation, i was nervous about it. Whatever, i finish it and i am satisfied with it, even it is not perfect. However, there are still some points which i can improve it. First of all, i was too nervous in the beginning of my presentation. If i slow down a little bit my speed of speaking, it may be better. Secondly, I have the problem about some vocabularies' pronunciation. As a result, i need to practice more about the pronunciation. On the other side, I like my power point which helps me a lot, i can just see my power point with notes to process my presentation. In addition, i enjoy the period of Q&A, it provides the integration between speaker and audiences. Also, it is a chance for teacher to see does speaker know his/her topic well. It is the most interesting part of presentation. In general, oral presentation improves our speaking skill and trains us courage to present in front of other people. Until now, I cant believe I had finish my research paper and oral presentation.

Research Papers

Finally, i finished research program, it was really grant chanllenge for me, especially write a long paper in second language.
However, it is worthy, i learn a lot from it.
First of all, we know how to look for the inf which we need and also how to use clues ans database. Its crucial when we have to collect some inf from different sources.
Secondly, fast reading. Because we get a lot of input from books, journals, magazines and internet. In order to paraphrase into ur own words, u must browse all the inf rapidly and get the main idea from them. It improves my ability in reading skill.
Thirdly, we need to know the basic rules about how to write ur paper in formal method. After we wrote all the paper, we need to integrate them again and decide how to place ur inf which includes attridution and references. It is a good foundation for our academic study and career area.

Improving Academic Skills Reading

Hello, everyone
It has been long time, i didnt post new stuff in my blog
After i finished the article, i am interested in first part- study habits.
In this section, it mentions that we need to devide into several small parts and do it everyday instead of saving all of it for later.
It is the same theory that we did the resaerch, it is really useful.
In my opinion, if i didnt do my research paper step by step , i cannt hand in my research on time.
Its a good suggestion which Lili gave us, everyday keep going on it even we only progress a little bit.
Give ourselves a schedule, dont make it to difficult tp achieve, otherwise, u will give up.
Everyday follow the plan and then u will see the result.
Also, the author mentions u need to reward urself when u achieve ur goal.
I completely agree that, taking rest is a preparation for following chanllenges.
In order to follow this rule, its time for me to take a rest after resaerch paper and presentation.
Haha......

defination for happiness

Pursuing happiness is most people’s goal through all whole life. However, everyone has different definitions of happiness. In my opinion, firstly, happiness is to be satisfied with what you already have. Of course, one also needs to have at least enough money to provide food, shelter, and clothing for one’s self and family—this is also important for happiness. Although, this rule sounds easy to achieve, in fact, many can not really follow it. Also, sometimes people won’t feel satisfied, even when they get what they want. In fact, they try to ask for more and never enjoy what they already have. This is why some rich people are still unhappy their life. Those of us in between these two extremes must be thankful for what we have and think about other people who has worse situation than us.

Secondly, happiness also include health which not only means physical health but also psychological. Without health in body and personality, it is difficult to pursue happiness.

Happiness is easy or difficult to achieve all depends on how people think about it. We have the right to decide which kind of life we want, everyone has the same hours per day and if you want to consume the time in pursuing happiness or suffering from sadness, it is up to the individual.

answer for population

1.

More and more populations are produced, it means we get more opportunities to develop human ability. We have more choices to set right person into right position. For example, in the Olympic Games, if one country has more residents, they can select the best athletes from various competitions in their population. Also, other industries can get better people to extend their domains. Moreover, population growth will inherit original cultures. Although some cultures will still disappear in our globalized world, with population growth we will have greater opportunity to preserve at least the memory of ancient cultures. Finally, with increasing population, there will be greater possibility for creative people to born and to produce beautiful art, music, or dance.

2.

Constantly increasing population will accelerate consumption of limited natural resources. In addition, over-populations need to share confined land, food, gas, fresh water, etc. Although technology will improve, someday technology will be unable to keep up with the speed of population growth and we will suffer from the battle of seizing these resources. In response to this, governments will need to draw up accurate plans to cope with over-population. They should improve the qualities education, mass transit and infrastructure to accommodate increasing residents. Otherwise, the quality of life will be damaged.

3.

In response to increasing population, the industrial sector will expand and become increasingly complex; as such, governments will have to begin to regulate industry. Government plays a vital role to decide a country’s progress. Because the economy of the world is growing, its economies will as well and if governments lead with accurate direction, its citizens will benefit from it.

First of all, government must manage the number of population to avoid out of control population growth. Secondly, health control, some industry countries exist some epidemic diseases. Government has a responsibility to inhibit is widespread. Finally, improve the educational system, accurate education build residents to correct conception in different aspects, such as health control, crime decreasing and career performance.

lecture summary by Vicky

I think my summary is a little bit long,so please keep reading patiently,haha....Vicky.

Different languages, used by different cultures, use different expressions to communicate ideas and thoughts. First of all, the organization of grammar and order are different in many languages. Secondly, the same word could mean different meanings in different cultures. Thirdly, how people choose the words to communicate also makes a difference. As a result, gender and cultures play a vital role for expressing human feelings. As a result, it is important to understand how culture and gender affect daily behavior.
Researchers grouped Japanese and American students to test their reactions to various questions. Several groups were formed two males and two females; all spoke the same language. Researchers did a series of comparisons in different ages, cultures and genders. Initially, they arranged students group discussions. The result showed American students directly express what they thought, regardless of age, status, or gender. In contrast, Japanese students were more selective of the words they used, depending on the listeners social status, age, and gender. In addition, Japanese students avoided argument during their communication.
Second, researchers gave several topics for students to discuss, then record how did each group start and handle a conversation, how did they express their thought and how did they negotiate with each other. Researchers found American students didn’t care who began the discussions. However, Japanese students would negotiate who should speak first. In general, the younger people or females would start the discussion..
Thirdly, researchers were interested in how age and gender affected students’ behaviors, so they settled the same gender pairs of friends for performing 20 minutes conversations. This study showed several results:
1st :7th grade girls were more likely to face to face during their conversation, compared to the same grade boys.
2nd : 2nd grade boys were more difficult to continue communication than 2nd grade girls.
3rd : 6th grade boys could not stand on same topics for a while; girls could take it longer.
4th :10th grade boys were able to start adult conversation but they only wanted to express their own experiences instead of listening to others; 10th grade girls were likely to tell their troubles and share mutual experiences.
5th :25-year-old men liked to discuss serious topic, such as financial, business, politics; 25-year-old women enjoyed sharing their personal affairs and attempt to assist each others.
Fourthly, men and women also had different behaviors in workplace.
1st: colleagues were more likely to be convinced by men than women, even they provided similar suggestion: because men always spoke as experts.
2nd : men and women also gave different performance during the meetings. If it was open discussion, both of them spent almost the same time on announcing their opinions; however, it is one person speaking at time, women would be less talking than men did: in general, men took ten to twenty seconds to take turn :but women only spent three to ten seconds.
This is interesting unit, because it is related to our daily life. We can think about the results and compare to our life to tell is it true or not. In my opinion, I agree above results which are reasonable for me.

post novel discussion

I am really happy, eventually I finish this novel. The author divided all the story into three parts. First two parts for me is a little bit boring, he described all the detail about life between animals and human at sea. However, when I continue to the last part, I start to pleasure it. In addition, today I discuss “Life of Pi” with my partners, it was surprising me that we got different opinions about outcome.
Question 1:
I was not very impressed by the novel, “Life of Pi.” Although it was a good book to read for somebody learning English, as it is quite easy, it is at the same time a little boring. Its plot is very flat and fairly uninteresting and after finishing I had the same feeling as the two Japanese officials who appear at the end of the novel: this story is too amazing and unbelievable. In addition, there were a number of threads that I did not understand. For example, the appearance of the blind Frenchmen seemed out of place for me. Nevertheless, despite these criticisms, “Life of Pi” is still a decent adventure novel.
Question 2
One major theme of “Life of Pi,” that re-occurs throughout the novel, is that conventional knowledge and conventional ways of looking at the world are often be chanllenged. For example, when Pi describes the way visitors to his father’s zoo misinterpret the preferences of animals the author for the first the misunderstandings of humans. Also, when Pi explains his story to the Japanese officials, they are unmoved and closed in their thinking also. With these two examples we see how Yann Martel’s novel shows the how difficult it is to change people’s conceptions.

Question 3

Although I understand how Pi thinks and can empathize with him; I couldn’t really identify with him personally. I am a Taiwanese girl from a large city and have never lived around animals. A zoo-keeper’s son from India who spent 227 days at sea with a tiger is simply too foreign for me. However, as a I said above, I can understand the characters, but generally I felt that some of characters were only there to express the story the author wished to tell.

Question 4

The dramatic plot is extremely important in this novel. It is through the plot that the author is able to express the ideas he wished to communicate in the novel. Without Pi’s 227 days hard floating at sea, described in detail by the author, the main ideas of the novel would be lost. The plot also served to keep me interested in the novel until the end and it also helped give me a better understanding of the psychology of the main characters.

reaction for language learner

In these days,we study in new unit (language learner) which discuss about what kinds of characteristics will affect success when we learn second language. Among a series of factors, most interesting for me is age which people start to learn second language at . In the context, there are two controversial issue. One side of resaerchers believe that if people start to study language at young age are faster than others who learn in older age. On the other hand, the others support adults are more likely to be successful. In my opinion, I agree the first theory for learning language.
First of all, younger people have better memory for experience new incident which means they are able to learn new language quickly. Secondly, compared to teenagers or adults ,children are less embrassed in making a mistake. They always try to speak out what they want to impress without anxiety. Therefore, they have more opportunities to practice repeatedly. In my personal experience, i can feel obviously that my ability of memory is getting worse than when i was high school. Therefore, i hope i had studied English well when i was child.

first assidnment-response

In my opinion, to be a good landuage learner must contain several elements. First of all, attach with new language in different resources. Reading book is not only way to improve ur second laguage, u need to contact with language in different ways, such as watching TV show, movie and listening to radio or music. Secondly, try to study hard. Most of language learner want to improve their second language as soon as possible. However, they didnt try to study hard to attach their goal. For example,if we want to raise our ability of new language we must to force ourself to get touch with it everyday. Many learner only make perfect plan ,but they never practice thir schedule constantly. Finally, if you can travel the country where residents speak language you want to learn. Learning from environment is the best and easy process to improve new language. It is like we learn our firsr laguage from childhood, you experience everything with new language. This is why many people travel foreign countries to learn new language. In addition, you can experience different cultures from local life.
